Lighting Up for a Cause

This weekend, Red Deer is gearing up to join the nation in raising awareness for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) on the 12th annual World Duchenne Awareness Day, celebrated on September 7. To show solidarity, the iconic Red Deer City Hall will illuminate in vibrant red, marking September as Duchenne Awareness Month.

The Impact of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy

Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy is a devastating and rare genetic disorder that primarily affects boys, striking about 1 in 5,000 male births across the globe. In Canada, more than 800 boys and young men are affected by this relentless disease, with over 45 families impacted in Alberta alone. Typically diagnosed between the ages of 3 to 6, DMD poses serious challenges not only for those diagnosed but for their loved ones as well.
