2024-09-27

RCMP Challenges Premier's Statements

In a surprising turn of events, the Alberta RCMP has challenged Premier Danielle Smith's recent statements regarding police staffing in the province, asserting that her claims were 'inaccurate.' This revelation came after the Premier addressed policing needs during the Alberta Municipalities Convention held in Red Deer.

Premier Smith's Claims

During her speech, Premier Smith highlighted concerns about police staffing, stating, 'The RCMP has not been able to fill the need that we have.' She went on to assert that Alberta pays for 1,911 officers, but that there are 400 or 500 vacancies, leading to fears of under-policing in both municipal and rural communities.

RCMP's Response

However, the Alberta RCMP quickly refuted these claims. On Friday, they clarified that there are actually 1,772 officer positions within the RCMP's provincial contract—139 fewer than what Smith had indicated. The RCMP revealed that only 124 of those positions are currently unfilled. Additionally, 182 officers are on leave for medical, parental, or other reasons, resulting in a more accurate provincial vacancy rate of 17.3 percent.

Emphasis on Transparency

'These statistics are shared with our provincial partners every month,' the RCMP stated, emphasizing their commitment to transparent communication.

Growing Interest in Law Enforcement

In a proactive move, Alberta has welcomed over 1,400 RCMP applicants so far this year and expects that number to double by the end of 2023. This surge represents a remarkable 77 percent increase in applications over the past five years, indicating a growing interest in law enforcement careers in the province.

Exploring New Policing Models

Moreover, the Alberta RCMP revealed that they are exploring new policing models and engaging with communities to better understand local needs and enhance service delivery.

Commitment to Service

Deputy Commissioner Rob Hill, who commands the Alberta RCMP, expressed the pride that officers feel in their role, stating, 'We are here to serve and protect Albertans, and we will continue to do so with dedication and integrity.'
