Quadratic Sound's Temporary Closure

In a surprising twist that has left music lovers in Victoria buzzing, Quadratic Sound, a vibrant live music venue nestled within the industrial region of Burnside Gorge, has announced the cancellation of all its upcoming shows following a recent inspection by city bylaw officers. However, the ambitious team behind the venue is determined to bounce back, asserting that they remain optimistic about resolving the necessary permit and fire-code concerns.

A Hub for Local Musicians

Since its inception in 2022, Quadratic Sound, which boasts a cozy capacity for 75 attendees, has not only served as a rehearsal and recording space for local musicians but has also transformed into a popular live performance spot above a bottle recycling depot at 655 Queens Ave. The venue's co-owners, a group of passionate musicians, have cultivated a community hub for live music and artistic expression, making its temporary closure particularly disheartening for fans and artists alike.

City Officials Offer Support

City officials, including Nichola Reddington, manager of arts, culture, and events, expressed optimism regarding the venue's future. Reddington revealed that staff have been collaborating closely with Quadratic Sound's management to clarify the permits required and identify fire-code or building issues that need to be addressed before events can recommence. "It’s all actually looking quite positive in terms of the possibility of it opening again," she stated, providing a beacon of hope amid the uncertainty.

Zoning Regulations and Future Meetings

The decision to halt operations came after city officials informed Quadratic Sound that their events were breaching zoning regulations. Co-owner and COO Emily Mahbobi explained that the situation took the team off guard. "It caught us by surprise for sure," she commented, underlining that while there were occasional noise complaints in the predominantly industrial neighborhood, they were typically resolved without any issues.

Interestingly, recent communications indicate that the zoning concerns may no longer be a significant barrier, as Reddington clarified that the focus is shifting more towards resolving fire-code and building permit matters. "That’s really good news," she noted, highlighting the city’s commitment to supporting Victoria's cultural community.

Plans for Reopening

An inter-departmental meeting is set to take place soon, designed to outline the necessary "step-by-step" requirements for Quadratic Sound to reopen its doors to the public. In the interim, Mahbobi reassured patrons that while live events are on hold, their primary services—rehearsal and recording spaces—will continue running as usual, and they are currently maintaining a waitlist for new applicants.

Rise to Prominence

Interestingly, the venue rose to prominence by accident. Mahbobi recounted how during the COVID-19 pandemic, musicians returned to the venue for jam sessions, drawn together by a longing for human connection. The unexpected turnout had a domino effect, leading to the hosting of around 305 events with nearly 10,000 attendees since then.

Commitment to Local Artists

The owners take pride in their selfless operation of Quadratic Sound, where all proceeds are funneled back into funding performances and supporting local artists. "We only need so much to pay our operating costs… we try to favor the organizer as much as possible in those splits,” Mahbobi explained. Notably, they operate on a $5 club membership model and do not sell alcohol, a refreshing approach in today's monetized entertainment culture.

Challenges Faced by Art Spaces

Meanwhile, Victoria’s city councilor Matt Dell highlighted the pressing challenges faced by art spaces, particularly in a city where rental costs are escalating. This pressure often translates into an increase in venues set up within warehouses that may not meet all regulatory requirements, resulting in precarious circumstances for local operators.

Resilience in the Face of Adversity

Despite these hurdles, Mahbobi remains resilient, drawing strength from previous challenges the venue has overcome, including pivoting to run STEM boot camps for children during the height of the pandemic. "If people think that a little visit from bylaw is going to shut us down, they better think twice because we’ve been through it before, and this isn’t going to stop us,” she declared with unwavering determination.

Looking Ahead to the Future

The community will undoubtedly be watching closely as Quadratic Sound works towards compliance and aims for a triumphant return to hosting live music. Stay tuned for updates, as this local gem appears set to defy the odds once again!
