Since its inception in 2022, Quadratic Sound, which boasts a cozy capacity for 75 attendees, has not only served as a rehearsal and recording space for local musicians but has also transformed into a popular live performance spot above a bottle recycling depot at 655 Queens Ave. The venue's co-owners, a group of passionate musicians, have cultivated a community hub for live music and artistic expression, making its temporary closure particularly disheartening for fans and artists alike.

City Officials Offer Support

City officials, including Nichola Reddington, manager of arts, culture, and events, expressed optimism regarding the venue's future. Reddington revealed that staff have been collaborating closely with Quadratic Sound's management to clarify the permits required and identify fire-code or building issues that need to be addressed before events can recommence. "It’s all actually looking quite positive in terms of the possibility of it opening again," she stated, providing a beacon of hope amid the uncertainty.

Co-owner and COO Emily Mahbobi explained that the situation took the team off guard. Mahbobi recounted how during the COVID-19 pandemic, musicians returned to the venue for jam sessions, drawn together by a longing for human connection. The unexpected turnout had a domino effect, leading to the hosting of around 305 events with nearly 10,000 attendees since then.

The owners take pride in their selfless operation of Quadratic Sound, where all proceeds are funneled back into funding performances and supporting local artists. "We only need so much to pay our operating costs… we try to favor the organizer as much as possible in those splits,” Mahbobi explained. Notably, they operate on a $5 club membership model and do not sell alcohol, a refreshing approach in today's monetized entertainment culture.
