In a shocking incident that underscores the risks law enforcement faces daily, a Cobourg police officer was exposed to fentanyl while attempting to apprehend a suspect.

The trouble unfolded on a Sunday night when the officer spotted a 33-year-old woman wanted for a series of offenses, including causing a disturbance and missing court appearances. During the arrest, signs of opioid exposure became apparent, prompting immediate action.

Another officer quickly administered naloxone, a lifesaving medication, allowing the affected officer to be swiftly transported to the hospital. Thankfully, after receiving treatment, the officer has been released and is expected to make a full recovery.

The suspect now faces additional charges, including possession of fentanyl, contributing to the ongoing crisis of drug-related incidents plaguing communities.
