Meet Jennifer Carter: A Mother on a Mission

Cobble Hill’s very own Jennifer Carter, a devoted mother of three, is gearing up for an extraordinary challenge this fall. Inspired by a cause close to her heart, she’s trading her parental duties for cycling gears to support Cops for Cancer’s Tour de Rock. For Jennifer, the words 'childhood' and 'cancer' are a pairing that should never exist.

"I thought it was an incredible cause that raises significant funds for childhood cancer research," Carter shared. "I wanted to give back to my community and take on this challenge head-on."

From Novice to Cyclist: The Journey Begins

It’s hard to believe, but Jennifer had never ridden a road bike until joining this tour. "This is my first real experience biking since I was a kid," she admitted.

The Tour de Rock kicks off on September 20 in Port Alice and concludes in Victoria on October 3, making it a full-circle moment for Carter, who spent eight years in Victoria before moving to Cobble Hill. The draw of being closer to family led her to the beautiful Cowichan Valley.

A Caring Heart: Jennifer's Professional Background

With 16 years in BC Emergency Health Services, and over three years at the Duncan station as a Primary Care Paramedic and Acting Unit Chief, Carter has built her career on compassion.

"Connecting with people and providing care is why I do what I do," she said, embodying the spirit of service that drives her both personally and professionally.

Cycling for Change: Making a Difference

Carter, among other first responders, will embark on this cycling adventure to uplift children facing cancer. Since its inception in 1997, Tour de Rock has raised an astounding $56 million for childhood cancer research, with an annual goal of $1 million. Each participant aims to raise a minimum of $5,000, ensuring children with cancer can attend the life-changing Camp Goodtimes.

Jennifer was unaware of this camp before joining Tour de Rock but has since visited it and was deeply moved by the experience.

A Personal Journey Through Loss

Cancer is not just a statistic for Carter; it’s personal. She lost her 67-year-old father to the disease in 2020, alongside three grandparents and a cousin to breast cancer. As she rides for her honorary rider Chelsea from Nanaimo, she also rides in memory of those she loved.

A Balancing Act: Family, Work, and Training

In addition to her paramedic duties and being a mother, Carter is an avid hiker and runner, though she’s now dedicating her energy to mastering cycling. Training twice a week plus independent rides has posed its challenges, especially the struggle to find time.

"Juggling family life with my training schedule has been demanding," she explained.

Riding with Purpose: Fundraising Goals

Carter aims to raise $10,000 for this important cause. If you want to support her mission, check out her fundraising page!

"The camaraderie among our team, coming from various backgrounds, has been inspiring. It's shown me the profound impact we can make together, and my hope is to raise more awareness and funds for childhood cancer research," she concluded, embodying the spirit of unity and hope.
