In a stunning development, nearly 200 developers from the Overwatch franchise at Activision Blizzard have taken a monumental step: they've formed a union! Under the banner of the Communications Workers of America (CWA), they are now officially recognized as the Overwatch Gamemakers Guild, joining the ranks of other Blizzard unions that have emerged since Microsoft took the reins.

A Call for Change in Gaming!

The CWA confirmed that an "overwhelming majority" of the team's members have either signed a union authorization card or expressed their desire for representation. This new union includes a diverse range of professionals—from game design and art to sound and quality assurance—united in their fight for better job security, improved salaries, and protection against layoffs.

One organizing committee member, Foster Elmendorf, expressed the collective spirit of the group: "After a long history of layoffs, crunch, and subpar working conditions in the global video game industry, my coworkers and I are thrilled to join the broader movement to elevate our industry for the better. The union's formation comes in the wake of serious allegations against Activision Blizzard, including claims of a toxic work environment and incidents of sexual harassment. These issues surfaced prominently after a lawsuit was filed by the state of California in 2021, even before Microsoft's acquisition of the company in 2023. Former CEO Bobby Kotick controversially denied responsibility for these reported abuses, blaming them instead on the very workers advocating for change.

Unionization On the Rise!

The recent unionization trend is part of a larger movement within Microsoft’s gaming subsidiaries, where more than 2,600 workers have already joined the CWA. This includes a union of 600 quality assurance workers from Activision who organized back in March 2024. This wave of solidarity was made easier by a labor neutrality agreement struck between the CWA and Microsoft in 2022, paving the way for staffers at Activision Blizzard to form unions without the usual hurdles.
