In a surprising turn of events, the Ottawa Senators have kicked off Day 2 of the NHL draft with an impactful trade, acquiring talented right-shot defenceman Jordan Spence from the Los Angeles Kings.

The deal, confirmed by Postmedia, involves Ottawa sending their No. 67 overall draft pick this year and a sixth-rounder in the next draft to Los Angeles. This strategic move is seen as a crucial step in bolstering the Senators' defensive lineup.

At just 24 years old, Spence brings significant potential to the Senators. He steps in as a solid replacement for veteran defenceman Nick Jensen, who is recovering from hip surgery and may not return until well into the season.

Drafted in the fourth round of 2019, Spence has played 180 career games, showcasing his skills with four goals and 28 points over 79 appearances last season. His experience also includes 13 playoff games, adding valuable depth to Ottawa’s defense as they gear up for the upcoming campaign.

This acquisition leaves the Senators with a robust roster of six healthy defencemen heading into training camp, after Nikolas Matinpalo made a name for himself last season. Young prospects Lassi Thomson and Carter Yakemuch are also positioned to compete for roster spots.
