Big News for Seniors in Ontario!

Hold on to your hats, Ontario! Starting this fall, anyone aged 75 and older will qualify for a *free* RSV vaccine that fights against the respiratory syncytial virus. This game-changing announcement is set to come from Health Minister Sylvia Jones, as confirmed by the Ministry of Health.

A Significant Expansion in Coverage

Previously, the Ontario government only funded RSV vaccines for seniors 60 and older who were deemed high-risk—think transplant recipients and nursing home residents. But now, this crucial shot will be accessible to all individuals 75 and up!

Why This Matters

RSV may sound like just another winter virus, but it can cause severe illness in the elderly and infants, leading to hospitalizations. As Jackson Jacobs, a spokesperson for Minister Jones, stated: "Our government is ensuring that people across the province have the tools they need to keep themselves and their loved ones safe during the upcoming respiratory illness season."

New Advances in Vaccination!

Remarkably, until 2023, Canada had no approved vaccines to combat the severe effects of RSV. Now, there are three options, including an innovative mRNA vaccine that uses the technology introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic. The National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) is strongly advocating that seniors 75 and older get vaccinated.

What About Infants?

Alongside adults, recent developments also focus on infants. Health Canada has now approved nirsevimab, a monoclonal antibody that can be administered once a season to protect newborns from RSV—a significant leap from the previous monthly injections of the older antibody, palivizumab.

A Widespread Health Initiative

Ontario, Quebec, and the territories are set to provide universal coverage for nirsevimab for babies during the upcoming RSV season. This is a proactive step to shield our youngest and most vulnerable from a virus that can wreak havoc.
