In a harrowing scene early Thursday morning, firefighters rushed to a deadly encampment fire in North York, only to face towering flames reaching 30 to 40 feet high and the terrifying sound of exploding propane tanks. This was no ordinary blaze.

Toronto Fire Chief Jim Jessop reported that emergency crews were dispatched to a wooded area near Eglinton Avenue East and Credit Union Drive around 4:30 a.m., following alarming reports of a significant fire.

Upon arrival, firefighters found the inferno already raging but managed to extinguish it in under 15 minutes. Tragically, they discovered one person deceased inside the encampment, whose identity has yet to be made public.

The investigation into the fire's cause is ongoing, but Jessop noted that the encampment featured multiple structures made of wood and cardboard, leading to a dramatic fire progression. Notably, one structure contained a wood stove, highlighting the setup's potential for danger.

Given the presence of numerous propane tanks and gas cylinders in the vicinity, it is little wonder that the flames soared to such heights. Chief Jessop remarked, "I’m not surprised at the intensity of the fire with combustibles of this size present."

In light of this tragedy, city officials have been alerted to the situation. Jessop confirmed that teams will be on-site later today to assist those affected, offering them safe indoor shelter.

Both the Office of the Fire Marshal and Toronto police will conduct thorough investigations into the circumstances surrounding this horrific event.
