On March 24, the Fred A. Lundy Bridge in Newmarket will shine a striking red as part of a nationwide initiative to honor World Tuberculosis (TB) Day. This year, more than 50 monuments across Canada will be illuminated in red to raise awareness about TB, the world's deadliest infectious disease.

According to public health advocates, this campaign is especially critical amidst rising TB rates in Canada and cuts to global health budgets in various countries. Taryn Russell, executive director of Results Canada, emphasized the importance of standing with those affected by TB: “The alarming rise in cases here reflects a troubling global trend. We must confront this crisis together, as infectious diseases know no borders.

Recent statistics reveal that in 2023, TB claimed the lives of 1.25 million people worldwide, with the disease predominantly affecting marginalized communities, particularly Indigenous populations and newcomers in Canada. “This trend of high-income nations reducing support for low-income countries is unacceptable and threatens millions of lives,” noted Resolve Canada, highlighting that the United States currently accounts for 42% of global health funding.

The red lighting of monuments signifies not only awareness but also a collective commitment from Canadians. Russell remarked, “The fact that more landmarks are being lit than ever before demonstrates a strong dedication to global health issues.” The bridge and other monuments stand as a testament to the hard work of volunteers advocating for increased awareness and action against TB.

Members of the public are invited to visit the Fred A. Lundy Bridge on the evening of March 24 for a photo opportunity. Participants are encouraged to share their pictures on social media using the hashtag #YesWeCanEndTB and to send these images to their local Members of Parliament, urging for urgent action to combat TB both domestically and internationally.

Russell stated, “This partnership with Newmarket is a crucial step towards a world free from TB, ensuring every person has access to the healthcare resources they require.”

As we recognize World Tuberculosis Day, let us all unite to defeat this preventable and treatable disease once and for all. Will you join the fight?
