In a bold move that has excited fans and critics alike, rock legend Neil Young has announced that he will no longer offer ‘Platinum’ tickets for his future tours. This decision comes after he was inspired by remarks from The Cure’s frontman, Robert Smith, who has long been an outspoken critic of such pricing methods.
The ‘Platinum’ ticket system, often utilized by platforms like Ticketmaster, was designed to deter scalpers from snatching up premium tickets and reselling them at exorbitant prices. However, it has faced backlash for its pricing strategy, which many deem a money grab.
In a candid interview with The Times, Smith condemned the ‘Platinum’ ticket and dynamic pricing schemes as a “scam” fueled by greed. He emphasized that artists should not solely be driven to maximize profits. Instead, he believes that offering fair prices leads to goodwill among fans, who are then likely to return for future shows.
Feeling compelled by Smith’s insights, Young shared on his Archives website that he considers ‘Platinum’ tickets to be detrimental, allowing him to take too much money from his loyal followers. He stated, “My management and agent have always tried to cover my back on the road, getting me the best deals possible. They have aimed to shield both me and the fans from scalpers profiting off concert tickets.”
Young further expressed his concerns about the system, stating, “Ticketmaster’s high-priced Platinum tickets were implemented in the areas where scalpers were most active. The money went to me, and that did not feel right. Very soon, Platinum tickets will no longer be available for my shows.” He advised fans to act quickly when tickets are released, or risk facing higher costs on secondary marketplaces.
In light of increasing scrutiny, the UK government has vowed to address the issues surrounding dynamic pricing, particularly following the backlash from Oasis’s notorious ticket sales last summer.
As for Neil Young's upcoming plans, he is set to embark on his ‘Love Earth’ world tour this summer, which includes a highly anticipated performance at the iconic Glastonbury Festival in June. He will also headline the BST Hyde Park concert in July, sharing the stage with legends like Yusuf / Cat Stevens and Van Morrison.
In addition to his touring news, Young recently dropped a new track titled ‘Big Change’ in collaboration with The Chrome Hearts. He has hinted at the release of a debut album with the group, aiming to unveil it in April ahead of his summer performances.
With Young’s fresh approach to ticket pricing and his commitment to keeping concerts affordable for fans, it will be fascinating to see how other artists respond. Will his example lead to a more fan-friendly concert culture? Stay tuned!
