MIT Press Expands Its Scientific Reach
In a groundbreaking move, the MIT Press has proudly announced its acquisition of University Science Books (USB) from AIP Publishing, a branch of the American Institute of Physics. This strategic partnership promises to enhance the landscape of science education resources.
The Legacy of University Science Books
Founded in 1978, USB has built a stellar reputation for publishing top-tier intermediate and advanced science textbooks. Recognized for their commitment to exceptional quality and affordability, USB's authors have amassed a global following, establishing their textbooks in chemistry, physics, and astronomy as the go-to resources for students and educators alike.
Among its bestsellers are John Taylor’s iconic "Classical Mechanics," the ultimate choice for undergraduate mechanics courses across the U.S. and Canada, alongside his critically acclaimed "Introduction to Error Analysis." In addition, Don McQuarrie's renowned "Physical Chemistry: A Molecular Approach," affectionately dubbed 'Big Red,' holds the title of the second-most adopted physical chemistry textbook in the nation.
A Bright Future Ahead
Expressing excitement over the acquisition, Alix Vance, the CEO of AIP Publishing, stated, "We are thrilled to find a new home for USB’s prestigious list of textbooks in the sciences. The MIT Press, with its strong STEM focus and high production standards, is the ideal partner to carry on the legacy of University Science Books."
Amy Brand, director and publisher of the MIT Press, echoed this sentiment, remarking, "This acquisition is a perfect match for the MIT Press. USB’s distinguished science collection will enhance our well-established history in publishing foundational texts across multiple disciplines, including computer science, finance, and economics."
Transitioning Into a New Era
The MIT Press will officially take over the USB catalog on July 1, with inventory transitioning to Penguin Random House Publishing Services, their sales and distribution partner.
