Microsoft is facing significant backlash following a catastrophic failure of the Windows reset and recovery functionality. This issue has escalated to the point where the tech giant is compelled to roll out an emergency update.

While the latest versions, Windows 11 24H2 and Windows Server, remain unaffected, the problem has severely impacted many users still holding onto older systems, including the soon-to-be-retired Windows 10. This flaw emerged alongside the August 2025 security update, raising concerns about the quality control of Microsoft's updates.

Just days prior, Microsoft alerted users that servicing for Windows 10 22H2 would come to an end within 60 days, emphasizing the urgent need for upgrades. However, the reality is that millions of Windows 10 machines are ineligible for Windows 11 due to compatibility restrictions. Now, with the malfunctioning reset feature, those wishing to pass down their devices face a daunting challenge.

Microsoft acknowledged that users might encounter failures when trying to reset their devices or perform recovery tasks. Efforts to use features like "Reset my PC" or troubleshoot via Windows Update could hit a wall, exacerbating an already troubling situation.

Further complicating matters, Microsoft has indicated that starting August 12, upgrades might be met with a baffling error code (0x8007007F), affecting transitions from Windows 10 to versions 22H2 and 23H2, as well as various Windows Server updates. The company claimed to have ironed out these issues by August 15, advising users to simply retry the upgrade if they encounter the error.

As frustration mounts, affected users have no choice but to stand by while Microsoft scrambles to fix its blunder. The company has promised an out-of-band update to rectify the reset and recovery issues soon. Until then, users will have to pause their recovery efforts, leaving many in limbo. Microsoft’s current woes reflect not just on its software reliability but also on its diminishing reputation in ensuring a smooth user experience.
