Microsoft's Bold Moves in Europe

In a significant shift, Microsoft is easing the annoyances of Windows users in the European Economic Area (EEA) — which includes the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway. Following the repercussions of the Digital Markets Act, the tech giant is granting users the freedom to uninstall Edge, the Microsoft Store, and ditch the constant prompts to set Edge as their default browser.

Goodbye, Annoying Prompts!

Finally, Windows users in Europe can enjoy their experience without being pestered to choose Edge as their default browser unless they specifically open it. This change, which went live with Edge version 137.0.3296.52 on May 29th, is a refreshing departure that many wish could be launched in the United States too.

Customize Your Browsing Experience!

Changing the default browser has never been more user-friendly. Now, whether it's Chrome, Firefox, Brave, or another favorite, users can pin it directly to the taskbar with just a few clicks. Beyond basic settings, the default browser designation now extends to more types like 'read', ftp, and .svg files, enhancing usability.

Update Mechanism Remains Intact!

Worried about missing updates for apps installed through the Microsoft Store? Fear not! Even if users opt to uninstall the Store app, updates for previously installed applications will continue seamlessly, and reinstating the Store at any point will be hassle-free.

More Features Coming Soon!

But that’s not all! Microsoft is also integrating third-party apps to enable their web search results automatically within Windows Search upon installation. This update, set to roll out in early June, will allow features like the Microsoft Bing app, Widgets Board, and Lock Screen to seamlessly open online content using the selected default browser.

A New Era for Microsoft in Europe!

With these changes, Microsoft is not only complying with regulatory demands but also reshaping user experience for the better. These updates are a step towards giving users more control over their digital environment, and many are looking forward to what else Microsoft will do next!
