Microsoft Struggles with Windows Update-Induced Remote Desktop Failures: What You Need to Know!

In a shocking revelation, Microsoft has acknowledged that recent Windows updates are causing widespread Remote Desktop connectivity issues for users! Since January 2025, complaints have skyrocketed, leaving many to wonder about the reliability of their systems.

According to an official announcement from Microsoft, users who installed the January 2025 preview update (KB5050094) and subsequent updates may find themselves grappling with unexpected disconnections during their Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) sessions. This includes those utilizing Remote Desktop Services (RDS), vital for countless businesses and remote workers.

The company noted a significant spike in these disconnection reports coinciding with the release of the March 2025 Windows security update (KB5053598). Affected users are experiencing frustrating RDP disconnects, typically occurring 65 seconds into their attempts to establish UDP connections from Windows 11 version 24H2 PCs to RDS hosts running on older Windows Server 2016 systems.

Interestingly, while Windows Server 2025 systems themselves are not directly affected as RDS hosts, users connecting to them can still feel the brunt of the disruptions when acting as RDP clients to older servers.

But don't panic just yet!

Microsoft has a solution. The tech giant has rolled out a Known Issue Rollback (KIR) feature, effectively designed to reverse the adverse effects of non-security updates that slip through the cracks. Administrators handling enterprise-managed devices will need to install and configure the Windows 11 24H2 and Windows Server 2025 KB5053598 KIR group policy to address these issues.

To implement this remedy, IT professionals can navigate to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates, select the relevant Windows version, and ensure a system reboot to apply the changes. Microsoft has pledged that further guidance on deploying and configuring the KIR Group Policies is readily available on their support site.

But there’s more good news!

A permanent fix is on the horizon, with Microsoft promising an automatic update in the near future. Once this patch is released, organizations will no longer need to undertake the manual steps of configuring the group policy.
