In a whirlwind of roster changes, the New York Mets have made significant moves to adjust their lineup. Outfielder and designated hitter Jesse Winker has been reinstated from the 60-day injured list, taking over the spot of Starling Marte, who has been placed on the 10-day injured list due to a right knee bruise.

This shakeup comes as the Mets also transferred right-hander Tylor Megill to the 60-day injured list, creating space for Winker on the 40-man roster. Meanwhile, righty Zach Pop has been designated for assignment, a pivotal decision following his recent struggles.

Winker, now 31, has seen a comeback season with the Mets after a challenging year in 2023. He posted a .253/.360/.405 slash line last year, which led to a one-year contract renewal worth $7.5 million. This season, he participated in 24 games, hitting .239 with an oblique strain sidelining him for over two months, but he’s now ready to resume play in the outfield.

Conversely, Marte's status remains uncertain; last year, he also faced nearly a month's absence due to a similar knee issue. This year, he's sporting a .270 batting average. Winker and Marte, who hit from opposite sides, will impact the Mets' strategic deployments against opposing pitchers.

Additionally, Megill's elbow sprain landed him on the 15-day IL in mid-June, and while he's resumed throwing, the Mets don't foresee his return in the next month thus forcing them to rely on a constantly changing pitcher lineup.

As for Zach Pop, his recent stint on the roster lasted just three days, during which he struggled with a 4.88 ERA over his career. With a shaky 6.68 ERA since the beginning of the 2023 season, the Mets have decided to move on. Pop's affordability may attract attention from other teams, given that he's owed a minimal salary after the Blue Jays released him.

In a bid to bolster their depth, the Mets have also signed right-hander Junior Fernández to a minor league deal. Fernández brings a mixed bag of numbers from his previous stint with the Royals, logging a 4.93 ERA with a concerning walk rate but a decent strikeout percentage.

As injuries continue to plague their roster, the Mets are actively seeking solutions to maintain competitiveness, even as they work around the struggles of their emerging players.
