A Love Story for the Ages

In a whimsical twist of fate, a heartfelt message in a bottle tossed into the Atlantic Ocean nearly 13 years ago has surfaced on the shores of Ireland, reigniting the romance of its Newfoundland creators.

Brad and Anita Squires were just a year into their relationship when, during a serene picnic on Bell Island in September 2012, they decided to cast their love into the sea. Anita penned a sweet note detailing their day, which Brad eagerly threw into the waters of Conception Bay, believing it would vanish forever.

From Wilderness to Waves: The Discovery

Fast forward to last week, over 3,000 kilometers away, when Kate and Jon Gay stumbled upon the bottle while walking the stunning beaches of the Maharees peninsula. That evening, with members of a local conservation group, they pried open the bottle, revealing Anita's heartfelt message.

Martha Farrell from the Maharees Conservation Association quickly read the note, discovering the couple was not only still together, but thriving as a family with three children. "Love conquers all, even the Atlantic Ocean!" she exclaimed, thrilled by the unexpected connection.

A Journey Through Time

Brad, a police officer stationed in British Columbia, and Anita, then training to become a nurse in Newfoundland, maintained a long-distance relationship during their early days. They eventually married in 2016 and now share two teenagers and a toddler. "We were young in love then, and now we’re just older in love," Brad shared.

A Toast Across the Ocean

Upon discovering the letter, the Gay family raised a toast to the Squires, celebrating love that transcends distance and time. In a delightful exchange, Brad and Anita toasted their newfound friends across the ocean.

"We feel like we have new friends, and it's truly amazing," said Brad, who looks forward to celebrating their upcoming 10th wedding anniversary next year, coinciding with the Maharees Conservation Association's own decade of dedication.
