An Out-of-This-World Opportunity!

Imagine being isolated in a high-tech 3D-printed habitat, fighting equipment malfunctions and communication lags, all while trying to grow your own crops—sounds like reality TV, right? But for Laura Marie, a UK-born pilot currently flying for a regional airline in the U.S., this is about to become a reality as she trains for a groundbreaking Mars simulation mission.

Survival of the Fittest!

Laura triumphed over a staggering 8,000 applicants to secure one of the six coveted spots for NASA's Mars Dune Alpha habitat training at the Johnson Space Center in Houston. 'This is such a huge opportunity,' Laura exclaimed. She's set to join the mission that begins on October 19, where four primary crew members will live in the Mars simulation for a grueling 378 days.

Preparing for the Red Planet!

Laura, who holds a BA in philosophy and an MSc in aeronautics, is one of two alternative crew members ready to step in if needed. With a determined mindset, she aims to fully engage in the experience, despite being one of the alternates.

Scientific Groundbreaking!

This mission is the second of NASA's Chapea (Crew Health and Performance Exploration Analog) missions, designed to inform future manned missions to Mars by studying the physical and psychological health of astronauts. In addition to growing crops and conducting robotic operations, the crew will experience the rigors of simulated Mars walks while testing new technology.

A Passion for the Stars!

Growing up in Devon and moving to the U.S. in 2016, Laura always dreamed of working with NASA. Inspired by the first Chapea mission, she didn't hesitate to apply when the opportunity came up. 'Everything aligned, and I jumped for it!' she recalls.

The Challenge Awaits!

Training starts next week, and while the crew has already bonded during the intense selection process, challenges await. Laura is a self-described nature enthusiast, and the absence of natural sensations—like wind or the smell of grass—will be tough. Plus, she'll have to adapt to the communication delays mimicking those on Mars, with no live chats with mission control.

A Master of Distraction!

To keep her mind sharp during downtime, Laura plans to tackle a Rubik's Cube. 'I'm not just going to learn how to do it; I want to beat a record!' she shares excitedly.

Aiming for the Stars!

Even though this mission is just a simulation, Laura is eager for the future. NASA aims for crewed Mars missions in the 2030s, and she’s ready to answer the call. 'I would take that seat on that ride if it were ever offered to me,' she insists. 'Becoming a multi-planetary species is the future, and I'm thrilled to play a part in it through programs like Chapea!'
