Survival in Extreme Conditions

Belonging to the family Alvinellidae, P. hessleri is a small tube worm found exclusively in the hottest hydrothermal vents of the western Pacific, including the notorious Okinawa Trough and Mariana Back-Arc Basin. Measuring up to 0.8 inches (22 millimeters) long, these hardy worms dwell in protective tubes clinging to vent chimneys, showing extraordinary resilience amidst temperatures soaring to 608 degrees Fahrenheit (320 degrees Celsius).

What sets P. hessleri apart is its unique defense mechanism against the high concentrations of arsenic and sulfide that are lethal to most organisms. Unlike humans, who suffer devastating health effects from arsenic exposure, this small wonder cleverly utilizes it as a means of protection. It stores arsenic in its skin cells, allowing it to combine the harmful toxin with sulfides from vent fluids to create orpiment, a less toxic mineral. Co-author Hao Wang from the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Oceanology expressed his amazement upon first encountering these vivid yellow wonders via a remotely operated vehicle. He recounted, "Seeing the bright yellow Paralvinella hessleri worms standing out against the stark backdrop of the hydrothermal landscape was a surreal experience, making me question how any creature could survive in such an extreme and toxic world."
