Meet Derrick Finney: The Northside Artisan Crafting Beauty from Wood and Glass

Derrick Finney, a passionate woodcarver from Northside, is on a mission to transform simple pieces of wood into breathtaking works of art. Having pursued this awe-inspiring craft for nearly a decade, he finds immense joy in witnessing his projects evolve from concept to creation.

"When you look at a plain block of wood and realize you have the power to shape it into something beautiful with just a few tools, it's a truly remarkable experience," Derrick shares.

His adventure in carving began when he felt an irresistible draw towards the craft. Early on, he sought mentorship from experienced artisans, leading him to become a member of the Nova Scotia Wildlife Carvers and Artists Association. One of the most influential figures in his journey has been Tom Tonks, a seasoned carver from Dartmouth, whose guidance helped Derrick refine his skills significantly. "Tom provided one-on-one instruction that taught me crucial techniques, ensuring my projects turn out beautifully," he recalls.

One of the valuable lessons he learned is the importance of selecting the right wood. "It's not just about picking any block; you have to choose the wood that aligns with your project's needs," Derrick explains. He primarily works with basswood and tupelo, emphasizing that preparation is key: "Keeping my tools sharp and the wood ready for carving makes all the difference for my final pieces."

Derrick’s intricate projects can take days to finish, depending on the level of detail and the time required for painting. Nature serves as his greatest muse; from magnificently detailed barn owls to serene loons, Derrick’s work reflects the beauty surrounding him. "People often remark how authentic my carvings look, sometimes thinking they are store-bought," he proudly states.

Alongside his woodwork, Derrick has taken on a new challenge—stained glass artistry. Recently, he enrolled in classes at The Cape Breton Center for Crafts and Design, driven by a long-standing fascination with stained glass. "I'm finding it incredibly rewarding. It's a different way to express my creativity," he shares, as he balances his time between wood carving and glasswork.

Although Derrick does not take commissions, he displays his completed pieces in his workshop, and occasionally shares them on Facebook. "I may not have a website, but I love showcasing what I've created," he says.

Derrick Finney is not just preserving a craft; he's breathing life into it, connecting with nature, and inspiring others in his community. For those interested in exploring Derrick's unique creations, he can be contacted at [email protected].
