Breaking News: Measles Cases Surge!
FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — The Northern Health region is in the grip of a measles outbreak, with the latest count revealing five additional confirmed cases since late last week! According to the BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC), the total number of confirmed cases has now skyrocketed to 193, a sharp rise from 188 just days earlier.
This alarming increase, combined with three new cases reported in the Fraser Health region, pushes the total number of confirmed measles cases across British Columbia to a staggering 265 this year. Shockingly, Northern Health alone represents approximately 73% of these cases!
Probable Cases Decline Amid Active Monitoring
While no new probable cases have been identified recently, the count of probable cases in the Northern Health area has decreased slightly from 18 to 17. Fortunately, current reports indicate that there are no active measles cases in Northern Health; however, four active cases persist in the Fraser Health area.
Understanding Measles: Symptoms and Risks
The clock is ticking when it comes to measles: cases are considered active for a specific duration based on symptoms. The classic rash usually appears on the face and neck, before spreading. Accompanying symptoms include fever, runny nose, cough, and sensitive, light-inflamed eyes.
Measles is not to be taken lightly! The BCCDC warns that one in ten individuals infected with measles will require hospitalization, and the illness can lead to severe complications, including pneumonia. The urgency for vaccination and quick action in case of symptoms is paramount.
Possible Exposure Incident: Stay Alert!
In a related scare, Northern Health recently flagged a potential measles exposure incident at the Fort St. John Hospital’s emergency department, which occurred between 9 p.m. on August 28th and 1 a.m. on August 29th. Thankfully, as of September 15th, no additional exposure incidents have been reported in the region.
What Should You Do?
If you or someone you know is displaying symptoms of measles, do not hesitate—contact your primary care provider immediately to arrange for testing. Stay informed, stay safe, and let’s work together to curb this outbreak!
