Alberta is in the grip of a measles outbreak, with health officials announcing a shocking 29 new cases, pushing the total to a staggering 118 since early March.
Where Are the New Cases?
The recent surge predominantly affects Alberta's southern and central regions, while seven cases have emerged in the north and one in the bustling city of Edmonton.
Potential Exposure Sites Identified
Authorities have raised alarms about possible exposure to this highly contagious disease at multiple medical facilities in the Edmonton area. People visiting the Kinder Care Medical Clinic on April 10, the Ross Creek Medical Imaging Clinic in Fort Saskatchewan on April 11, or the ROKband Pediatric Headshape Clinic on April 14 could potentially be at risk.
Peace River Emergency Department Under Scrutiny
In a growing concern, the Peace River emergency department has also been flagged as a potential exposure site, with warnings for visits on April 15 and 16.
Most Cases No Longer Contagious
Fortunately, health officials report that only 12 of the cases remain contagious, with most infections primarily affecting children aged five to 17.
Hospitalizations and Ongoing Vigilance
As of the beginning of this month, eight individuals have been hospitalized due to measles-related complications. Health authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and to check their vaccination status.
