In a promising turn of events, the Southwestern Public Health (SWPH) region has reported a significant decline in new measles cases, marking the second consecutive week of single-digit infections. Last week saw just five new cases, following a previous count of four, bringing the total to a staggering 756 reported cases since October of last year.

Alarmingly, 74% of these cases have occurred in individuals aged 18 or younger, highlighting the vulnerability of younger populations during this outbreak.

Among those affected, 54 individuals, or about 7% of total cases, required hospitalization. Tragically, there has been one reported death linked to the measles outbreak.

Identifying Measles: Symptoms to Watch For!

Do you know the signs of measles? Symptoms typically emerge 7 to 14 days after exposure and can include:

- High fever

- Persistent cough

- Runny nose

- Red, watery eyes

- A red rash that begins on the face and spreads across the body.

Complications can be serious, including diarrhea, ear infections, and pneumonia. Rarely, measles can also lead to more severe issues like brain infections (encephalitis) or even death.

How Does Measles Spread?

Measles is highly contagious and can spread through several means. You can contract the virus if you breathe in air where an infected person has coughed or sneezed, or by touching contaminated surfaces and then touching your eyes, nose, or mouth. The virus remains viable in the air and on surfaces for up to two hours, making it incredibly easy to catch.

It's important to note that individuals infected with measles can spread the virus to others four days before the rash appears and up to four days after.
