Europe is facing a growing threat from one of the most contagious diseases known to mankind: measles. As we head deeper into 2025, health authorities are raising alarms over a sharp increase in cases, with a staggering 120,000 infections recorded across Europe and Central Asia last year—the highest since 1997.

Already this year, the European Union has reported approximately 5,500 cases of measles, predominantly affecting unvaccinated children under five, according to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC). The numbers are unsettling, and experts warn that unless action is taken, we could see the outbreak worsen in the months ahead.

Measles Hotspots in Europe

While the entire continent is at risk, certain countries are reporting alarming figures, particularly Romania, which has accounted for a staggering 3,605 cases as of late April, with three tragic fatalities. This ongoing outbreak is largely fueled by a blend of anti-vaccine sentiment, inconsistent health messaging, and an overwhelmed medical system.

Unfortunately, vaccination rates tell a dismal story. In Romania, only 62% of the population is fully vaccinated, falling well below the critical 95% needed to curb outbreaks.

France's Influx of Imported Cases

France isn't far behind, with 526 reported cases this year. The situation is exacerbated by a notable increase in cases brought from abroad, particularly from Morocco, where at least 41 infections have been traced back. Despite a relatively high vaccination rate of 93% in 2023, the presence of unvaccinated pockets allows the virus to flourish.

The Netherlands: Clusters and Concerns

In the Netherlands, there have been 371 measles cases in the first few months of 2025. Many of these infections are tied to travelers returning from Morocco and Romania. While health authorities are reporting clusters in places like schools and childcare facilities, they emphasize that there is currently no national outbreak.

With vaccination rates holding at just 81%, the Netherlands remains at risk, trailing only Romania and Cyprus for the lowest measles immunization coverage in the EU.

Italy and Spain: Rising Numbers Amidst Vaccination Efforts

Italy has recorded 268 cases so far this year, again showing higher rates than most EU countries except Romania, driven largely by its vaccination rate of 85%, which is inadequate for preventing outbreaks.

Spain, while closer to achieving herd immunity with 92% fully vaccinated, has not been spared either, experiencing localized outbreaks resulting in 251 cases this year, many of which were imported.

In response to this emerging healthcare crisis, the Spanish Ministry of Health is urging citizens to verify their vaccination status and highlighting that increased travel post-pandemic has raised the risk of imported infections.
