Measles Outbreak in Ontario

As Ontario grapples with a significant outbreak of measles, health authorities in Ottawa are taking proactive measures by monitoring wastewater for traces of the virus. The ongoing spread of this highly contagious disease raises alarms, with local health officials emphasizing the need for vigilance and vaccination.

Expert Warnings

Dr. Gregory Rose, the director of infection prevention and control at Queensway Carleton Hospital, has underscored the seriousness of the situation. With 440 recorded cases across Ontario, predominantly among unvaccinated children, he warns that it’s only a matter of time before Ottawa sees cases of its own. "It is inevitable we will have cases in Ottawa," he said, reflecting on the unprecedented scale of the outbreak since measles was declared eliminated in Canada following successful vaccination campaigns in 1998.

Current Situation in Ottawa

Much of the outbreak’s epicenter has been identified in southwestern Ontario, although instances have emerged throughout the province, including parts of Eastern Ontario. Alarmingly, Ottawa has not reported any measles cases so far this year, with the last confirmed instance dating back to 2019.
