Breaking News from Fort St. John!
Two fresh cases of measles have emerged in the Northern Health region, as confirmed by the BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC). This alarming announcement raises the total number of confirmed cases in the area to 195, up from 193 just days ago.
Provincial Measles Count Climbs to 267!
These two cases are the sole new infections identified throughout British Columbia, escalating the province's overall total from 265 to 267. Alarmingly, Northern Health now accounts for a staggering 73% of all confirmed measles cases in the province this year.
Potential Case Count Could Be Even Higher!
While the number of probable cases remains steady at 17—16 of which originate from Northern Health—the overall case tally for the year could potentially reach a jaw-dropping 284. Fortunately, all reported cases are currently considered inactive.
Recognizing Measles Symptoms!
Measles symptoms can start subtly: coughing, runny nose, fever, and bothersome, inflamed eyes. The notorious rash usually makes its appearance first on the face and neck before spreading to the torso. If you or someone you know exhibits these signs, it’s crucial to contact a healthcare provider immediately.
A Dangerous Disease!
The BCCDC underscores the severe nature of measles, stressing that 1 in 10 infected individuals may end up hospitalized. Complications can escalate to serious conditions such as pneumonia, and in the most severe instances, measles can be fatal.
Recent Exposure Alerts!
In a related incident, Northern Health warned of a possible exposure to measles at the Fort St. John Hospital’s emergency department late last month. This potential exposure occurred between 9 p.m. on Thursday, August 28th, and 1 a.m. on Friday, August 29th.
Stay Informed and Safe!
As of September 22nd, no additional exposure incidents have been reported in the region. If you're experiencing symptoms, don’t hesitate to reach out to your primary care provider for testing.
Stay Vigilant and Protect Yourself!
With measles on the rise, it’s more crucial than ever to stay informed and act promptly. Your health and safety come first!
