Urgent Measles Warnings in Alberta!

Alberta Health Services (AHS) has just issued alarming new advisories as the province grapples with a measles outbreak. Multiple locations across St. Albert, Edmonton, and parts of northern Alberta are flagged for potential exposure.

Outbreak Continues to Grow

Over the last few days, AHS has ramped up warnings about hotspots where individuals may have come into contact with the highly contagious virus. As of now, Alberta counts a staggering 1,020 measles cases, seven of which are in Edmonton, with an alarming 204 located just north of the city.

Who is at Risk?

AHS warns that individuals born in or after 1970 and who have not received at least two documented measles vaccinations should be particularly vigilant. Those who may have visited the identified locations during the specific exposure times are advised to monitor for symptoms.

Recognizing the Symptoms

Symptoms to watch for include high fever (38.3°C or above), cough, runny nose, red eyes, and a rash that typically emerges three to seven days after the initial fever. The rash begins on the face or behind the ears before spreading to the rest of the body.

Precautions for Suspected Cases

Given the contagious nature of measles, anyone suspecting they might be infected is urged to call the health hotline (1-844-944-3434) prior to visiting hospitals or clinics. Several recent hotspots were identified in emergency wards, including Stollery Children's Hospital and Misericordia Community Hospital.

Several specific locations have been highlighted for potential exposures. Here’s a list of places and times where precautions should be taken: - Holiday Inn Express and Suites, St. Albert: June 4, 10 p.m. to June 7, noon; - Panda Express, St. Albert: June 6, 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.; - Costco, St. Albert: June 5, 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.; - Walmart, St. Albert: June 6, 8 p.m. to midnight; - Kaye Edmonton Clinic, Edmonton: June 6, 10 a.m. to 1:15 p.m.; - Dairy Queen, Slave Lake: June 6, 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Stay informed and protect yourself and your family!
