Mazda Unveils the MX-5 12R: The Ultimate Miata for Track Enthusiasts!
In an exciting announcement at the Tokyo Auto Salon in early January, Mazda has officially unveiled a limited-edition version of its iconic MX-5 Miata, aptly named the MX-5 12R. Celebrating the fourth generation of the Miata (ND version) on the brink of its 10th anniversary in 2025, this model is poised to be the most powerful factory variant ever produced. Unfortunately for fans outside Japan, only 200 units will be manufactured, and they’ll be exclusive to the Japanese market.
Performance Upgrades That Will Blow Your Mind!
The MX-5 12R is no ordinary Miata. It features an array of high-performance modifications designed for track enthusiasts. This model boasts a revised engine with a new cylinder head, upgraded pistons, an optimized exhaust manifold, and modified camshafts. All these enhancements bring the engine's output to an impressive 197 horsepower. While the torque specifications haven't been officially disclosed, it is expected to surpass the standard model's 151 lb-ft, offering a thrilling driving experience.
Track-Ready Features Galore!
Designed with racing in mind, the MX-5 12R comes equipped with top-of-the-line Brembo brakes for superior stopping power, and high-performance tires that ensure grip on the track. Additionally, the car is fitted with custom Bilstein dampers and specialized coil springs for enhanced suspension performance, along with a Mazda Spirit Racing strut brace that reinforces the chassis for added stability.
The styling of the 12R is equally impressive. A carbon fiber body package, combined with striking dark grey Mazda Spirit Racing decals and lightweight 17-inch Rays wheels, not only makes this Miata stand out but also contributes to its agile performance. The chassis is deliberately lowered to improve aerodynamics, creating a sleek and sporty look.
A Driver's Dream Inside and Out!
Diehard Miata fans will be thrilled to know that the 12R is exclusively available with a six-speed manual gearbox, staying true to the brand's racing heritage. The interior is a nod to professional racing, featuring a black and red color scheme prominently showcased in the Recaro bucket seats and the racing-style steering wheel equipped with a four-point harness.
Unfortunately, given its limited production run, most enthusiasts outside of Japan might be left out. However, Mazda has announced plans to create a modified version of the MX-5 12R, which will have a standard 181-hp 2.0-liter engine but still sport the same chassis. This could be a silver lining for fans hoping to experience something close to the 12R.
Good News for Miata Lovers in America!
While the MX-5 12R may not make its way to the U.S., Mazda USA has managed to secure a limited quantity of the MX-5 35th Anniversary Editions, which were launched last year. This is a small consolation for Miata enthusiasts who may be disappointed by the exclusivity of the 12R.
Stay tuned as this thrilling chapter for Mazda's iconic roadster unfolds, and who knows? Perhaps more exciting news is on the horizon that could bring this remarkable performance-driven variant to a wider audience!
