Urgent Measures Amid Rising Measles Cases

In a bold move to tackle the escalating measles outbreak, Manitoba health officials are widening access to the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine. Infants as young as six months old in high-risk areas can now receive the vaccine earlier than previously allowed!

Who Qualifies for the Early Vaccine?

This new policy specifically targets infants aged six months to under a year who reside in the Southern Health–Santé Sud (SH-SS) and Interlake-Eastern Regional Health Authority (IERHA) areas. Additionally, infants who frequently travel to these regions or have close contact with residents there are also eligible for this crucial early vaccination.

What You Need to Know About the Vaccine

It's important to note that this early dose does not provide protection against chickenpox, as the combined MMRV vaccine is not recommended for children under 12 months. Therefore, anyone receiving the early MMR dose must still follow up with the standard immunization schedule, which includes two doses of the MMRV vaccine.

"To ensure lasting immunity, all children should continue to receive two doses of MMRV after their first birthday and at least four weeks following any prior measles vaccine," advises Manitoba Health.

Measles Outbreak Update

As of May 10, 2025, Manitoba has reported 44 confirmed cases of measles, alongside four probable cases, with infections dating back to early February. This unprecedented outbreak has sparked an urgent response to protect the youngest and most vulnerable members of the community.
