Major Snow Squall Warnings in Southern Ontario: Up to 60 cm Expected!

Snow squall warnings are currently in effect for various regions of southern Ontario, with forecasts predicting staggering snowfall totals of up to 60 centimeters by Saturday evening in specific areas. Residents along Lake Huron, particularly in cities like Kincardine, Hanover, Saugeen Shores, southern Bruce County, Dundalk, and southern Grey County are bracing for significant impacts from this lake-effect snow.

According to Environment Canada, the most intense snowfall is expected to hit tonight as stationary snow squall bands set up over affected areas. The weather service warns that these squalls can produce rapid changes in conditions, with clear skies transforming to heavy snow within just a few kilometers. As visibility decreases, hazardous travel conditions are anticipated, and the likelihood of road closures is high.

Additional weather warnings are also being issued for Barrie, Collingwood, Midland, and portions of York and Durham Regions, where accumulations are forecasted to be between 5 to 10 centimeters. However, much of southwestern Ontario finds itself under a snow squall watch, anticipating total snowfall between 20 to 35 centimeters by Saturday evening.

The weather alerts follow a recent winter blast, having already brought substantial snowfall to the territories north and west of Toronto, with some regions already reporting totals nearing 60 cm. Notably, numerous whiteout conditions have affected major highways, prompting the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) to respond to several traffic incidents. Thankfully, no injuries or fatalities have been reported.

In contrast, Toronto experienced only a light dusting of snow on Thursday, coupled with a 70% chance of flurries extending into Friday and even into the upcoming week. Currently, there are no weather advisories affecting the city, although residents are encouraged to remain vigilant as the projections indicate a mix of sun and cloud with temperatures dipping to a low of –6°C on Friday, while reaching a high of 1°C.

Stay safe and keep warm as southern Ontario faces this winter storm! Will you be prepared for the snowy weekend ahead?
