Major Shift for Beloved Christmas Day Dinner Tradition!
For over four decades, St. Paul's Anglican Church has been a beacon of hope during the holiday season, offering turkey dinners to individuals and families in need every Christmas Day since 1981. However, this cherished tradition is experiencing a significant change this year as it temporarily relocates for the first time.
This year, the annual turkey dinner will take place just a few blocks away from its usual venue, moving to St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church at 130 Clergy St. E. This shift marks a notable moment in the event's history due to several factors.
One of the primary reasons for this year’s relocation is the recent passing of Violet “Vi” Rosamond, a remarkable 97-year-old community member who had been an integral part of the dinner since its inception. Known for her unwavering dedication, Vi not only helped organize the event but also attended every year until her final moments.
Additionally, last year's attempt to host a Christmas dinner specifically for new Canadians did not attract as many attendees as expected, falling short of the typical turnout of around 200 people. These circumstances prompted St. Paul's decision to move the dinner this year.
Kerry Flanagan, a devoted volunteer and part of Day One Street Outreach— a coalition of different church members who work together to assist the homeless—has taken on the mantle of organizing this year’s dinner. 'A small group of us have been managing the kitchen at St. Paul’s for over 15 years,' he shared. With support from the Partners in Mission Food Bank and the Salvation Army, the group is committed to making this year's dinner a success at St. Andrew's.
Despite the challenges, St. Paul's leaders have confirmed plans to resume the Christmas Day dinner at its original location next year, contingent upon Flanagan and his team continuing to lead the effort.
The free turkey dinner will be served at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church from noon until 2:30 p.m. this Christmas Day. This event not only provides a warm meal but also fosters a sense of community, reminding everyone of the joy and solidarity that the holiday season brings.
As this beloved tradition adapts to unforeseen changes, it remains a vital resource, bridging connections and support for those in need during Christmas. So mark your calendars and join the celebration of community spirit this holiday season!
