Major Changes to Recycling Services in Ontario

As we step into the new year, Quinte Waste Solutions is celebrating 35 years of dedicated service in the Greater Quinte community, providing crucial blue box and hazardous electronic waste recycling. However, significant changes are on the horizon that will reshape recycling practices in Ontario, particularly affecting blue box services.

New Blue Box Recycling System Starting 2025

Starting this year, Ontario is ushering in a transformation in its blue box recycling system. A pivotal date to keep in mind is July 17, 2025, when Quinte Waste Solutions will officially close its operations at 270 West Street in Quinte West. This marks the end of GFL Environmental Services’ role as the contractor for the collection and processing of blue box materials.

E360 Solutions Takes Over

In an exciting shift, E360 Solutions, operating out of 50 Mineral Road, Belleville, will take over the collection of blue box recyclables. E360 has been chosen by Circular Materials Ontario to provide a streamlined blue box recycling service to municipalities, entering into contracts with all municipalities currently serviced by the Centre and South Hastings Waste Services Board.

Operation Oversight by Centre and South Hastings Waste Services Board

The Centre and South Hastings Waste Services Board oversees the operations of Quinte Waste Solutions and comprises nine member municipalities: Belleville, Quinte West, Prince Edward County, Centre Hastings, Tyendinaga Township, Marmora and Lake, Tweed, Madoc Township, and Stirling-Rawdon. This change is expected to improve efficiency, ensuring that recyclables are processed appropriately and sustainably.

Timeline for Changes

As the transition date approaches, Quinte Waste Solutions has outlined a timeline for changes to its current service model: - **March 31, 2025**: Service to hosted events will conclude. - **June 30, 2025**: The Recycling Depot at 270 West Street will close its doors for good. However, the new Recycling Depot is already operational at HGC Receiving Facility at 555 Station Street in Belleville, ready to serve residents and businesses alike.

Continued Operations of Hazardous and Electronic Waste Depot

While these alterations mark a significant shift in recycling operations, residents can rest assured that the Hazardous and Electronic Waste Depot located at 75 Wallbridge Crescent in Belleville will continue its operations without interruption. Additionally, in 2025, this depot will host nineteen mobile events across the nine municipalities, providing accessible options for residents to dispose of hazardous and electronic waste safely.

A Commitment to Sustainable Waste Management

This transition in the recycling program represents not just change, but also a commitment to sustainable waste management practices that cater to the needs of the community.
