Inspired by an online epiphany about sidewalk astronomy, Dyck's journey began in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, fueling his desire to share the wonders of the universe with others.

Kenton Dyck, a self-taught astronomy enthusiast, found his way to the stars through a series of interconnected interests—starting with history, then moving to aircraft, rocketry, and ultimately astronomy. In pursuing this newfound passion, he invested in a state-of-the-art 12-inch Dobsonian telescope, which he boasts may be the largest privately owned telescope in the province. His telescope, equipped with advanced features, allows for effortless stargazing experiences, locking onto celestial targets with precision.

"With this telescope, there's a fine line between a hobbyist's toy and a serious scientific instrument," Dyck emphasizes, noting that many researchers employ smaller models for astronomical mapping.

A Mobile Astronomy Club on the Rise

Dyck launched the Astro Club in the fall of 2023, focusing on creating accessible astronomy experiences. The club is unique for its mobile nature; Dyck has designed his setup to travel to various locations, offering star-gazing events within communities. "We've traveled 1,800 kilometers and welcomed over 1,800 attendees," he mentions. "The program is absolutely exploding—there's a ton of interest."

Dyck's efforts did not go unnoticed. A club member took the initiative to nominate him for a prestigious King Charles III Coronation Medal, an honor awarded to individuals who have made significant contributions to their communities or country. To his astonishment, he received the accolade, signifying the importance of his work in promoting astronomy.

"I never expected it. I was genuinely shocked when I got the call," Dyck admits, reflecting on the honor bestowed upon him and the exemplary individuals he now stands alongside.

A ceremony will be held in February in Carman to officially celebrate this significant accomplishment.
