Lions Club Donates $1,000 to Angel Flight: A Lifeline for Patients in Need
In a heartwarming show of community spirit, members of the Lions Club from Cranbrook gathered recently at the YXC Airport hangar to present a generous $1,000 donation to Angel Flight East Kootenay. This initiative offers crucial free transportation services for medical patients traveling from Cranbrook and the surrounding East Kootenay region to Kelowna, where they can access specialized medical treatments unavailable locally.
Angel Flight, a fully volunteer organization founded by Brent Bidston from Fernie, was established to ensure that no one has to forgo vital medical care due to transportation issues. Brent, a retired pilot from Korean Air, is also passionate about conducting air search and rescue missions in the majestic Rocky Mountains. This dual commitment to service exemplifies the spirit of giving that the organization stands for.
The Lions Club of Cranbrook is dedicated to uplifting the community through various fundraising efforts and service projects aimed at fostering a stronger, safer, and more inclusive environment. Lion Kevin Higgins, who emphasized the importance of Angel Flight, noted, "I may not have used Angel Flight myself, but I know several people who have benefited from their service. With numerous individuals needing radiation treatments, heart specialist work, and other medical assistance unavailable in Cranbrook, having this resource is a tremendous relief. I’m continuously amazed by how seamless their operations are in getting patients to Kelowna and back."
During the cheque presentation, a Cessna 414A was undergoing routine annual maintenance in the hangar, providing a glimpse into the operational backend that keeps Angel Flight's services running smoothly. While eager Lions members were prohibited from handling tools during the maintenance, their curiosity was evident as they watched the process unfold.
The Lions Club of Cranbrook invites anyone interested in joining this noble community service organization to their monthly dinner meetings, held every fourth Monday at Auntie Barb’s on Industrial Road #1. Individuals can reach out to Curtis Bell at 250-420-1309 for more information on how to get involved.
This donation not only symbolizes financial support but also reinforces the community's commitment to ensuring that no one faces their medical challenges alone. With organizations like Angel Flight and the unwavering support of groups like the Lions Club, the people of Cranbrook can continue to receive the help they need, when they need it most.
