In a powerful statement, nearly one-fifth of the Liberal caucus has rallied together, demanding urgent action to combat an alarming surge in antisemitism across Canada, sparked by a shocking incident involving the stabbing of a 70-year-old Jewish woman at an Ottawa grocery store.
The letter, shared on social media by Mount Royal MP Anthony Housefather, condemns what the lawmakers describe as a "deplorable" normalization of antisemitism in the country. Housefather, alongside 31 fellow MPs, expressed deep concern over the rise of hate crimes against the Jewish community.
In connection with the horrific act, police have charged 71-year-old Joseph Rooke with aggravated assault, identifying the event as a hate-motivated crime. Rooke's history of making "virulent antisemitic comments" on social media has come to light, leading to further outrage.
The grocery store, noted for its extensive kosher food selection, has become a focal point of this troubling trend. The MPs' letter highlights a disconcerting shift in public consciousness—"Three years ago, such an incident would have been shocking. Today, much less so." They pointed out the rising attacks on synagogues, Jewish-owned businesses, and community organizations as evidence of an escalating crisis.
The group has voiced support for recommendations from a recent House of Commons justice committee report advocating for increased funding to enhance policing and prosecution of hate crimes. They also urged the government to quickly amend the Criminal Code, enforcing stricter measures against intimidation at places of worship and community centers.
In a swift response, Conservative MP Melissa Lantsman criticized the governing Liberals, questioning their commitment and suggesting that the rest of the party fails to recognize the severity of the issue. She pointedly remarked, "After ten years of power, your plea to 'the government' is pathetic. You are the government."
The MPs' urgent letter also connects this rise in antisemitism with the recent spikes in tensions resulting from the war in Gaza, calling on all Canadians and levels of government to take action against the growing tide of hate.
Statistics Canada reported a stark rise in antisemitic hate crimes, with 920 incidents recorded last year alone—significantly higher than hate crimes targeting other religious groups.
Prime Minister Mark Carney denounced the grocery store attack as "senseless" and "deeply disturbing," extending solidarity to Canada’s Jewish community. "You are not alone. We stand with you against hate and threats to your safety," he stated in a social media post.
As the calls for action grow louder, the Liberal Party faces a critical internal caucus meeting next week, ahead of Parliament's return on September 15.
