As winter settles in with its chilly temperatures and blankets of snow, many of us are tempted to cozy up indoors and hibernate. However, Alberta Health Services (AHS) is encouraging the public to rethink this instinct and prioritize physical activity, even in the colder months.
Staying active during winter can be easily accomplished without the need to live at the gym. AHS emphasizes the importance of engaging in at least 2.5 hours (150 minutes) of moderate to vigorous physical activity each week. With some creative planning, these activities can be seamlessly incorporated into your daily routine, making it easier than ever to stay fit.
Carving out time for shorter bouts of activity each day can be incredibly beneficial. AHS points out, “A little goes a long way, and consistent, small steps often have the greatest impact on our health.” Elevating your heart rate through various activities can improve overall fitness and contribute to cardiovascular health, allowing for longer and more effective workouts.
Kids also benefit immensely from staying active in the winter. AHS recommends that children, even as young as preschoolers, engage in physical activities. Teens and children aged 5 and above should aim for at least one hour of moderate to vigorous activity every day. This not only supports their physical health but also enhances their mental well-being.
So, how do you squeeze in that activity? AHS offers several practical tips:
1. Set Movement Reminders
Use a timer to nudge yourself to get up and stretch at least once an hour.
2. Active Commuting
If possible, walk or bike to work. Consider parking a bit further away from your destination or getting off the bus a few stops early to add steps into your daily routine.
3. Take the Stairs
Whenever you can, opt for the stairs instead of the elevator, even if it’s just for a few floors.
4. Walking Meetings
Suggest having meetings while walking with co-workers to integrate movement into your workday.
5. Utilize Breaks
Make the most of lunch and coffee breaks by taking short walks. Opt for restrooms or coffee stations that are a bit further from your desk to get those extra steps in.
6. Find a Workout Buddy
Team up with a friend to stay motivated and accountable.
AHS reminds everyone that physical activity should feel enjoyable, not like a chore. Engage in activities that you love; after all, keeping fit is about finding joy in movement rather than punishing yourself.
As the famed philosopher Socrates once said, “It is a shame for a man to grow old, without seeing the beauty and strength of which his body is capable.” This winter, embrace the cold and keep moving towards a healthier you! Don't let the snow keep you inside—your body will thank you!
