Canadian country star Josh Ross is in hot water after a recent performance where he declared the U.S. to be "the best" country while waving an American flag, sparking outrage online.
The controversy erupted during the Tailgate N’ Tallboys festival in Bloomington, Indiana, where footage revealed Ross proudly holding the flag and sharing a surprising fun fact about his move to the U.S. He said, “I’m Canadian... but I moved to the best... country in the world and I love it very much.”
Fans in the crowd cheered, chanting "U.S.A! U.S.A!" as they passed him the flag, but not everyone was impressed. Critics quickly pointed out how his pro-American comments contradicted the essence of the 'Elbows Up' movement and sparked discussion surrounding tensions with former President Donald Trump's administration.
In response, Ross took to TikTok to issue an apology to anyone offended but clarified that his comments had been taken out of context. He expressed pride in his dual heritage, stating, “I feel like I’m always representing Canada no matter where I go.” Living in Nashville for over five years, he noted that half his family resides in Canada while the other half is in the U.S.
Ross emphasized the need for a balanced narrative, saying, “Both sides were not communicated in the clip that you guys are seeing, and I’m sorry that that wasn’t clear.”
This incident adds to Ross’s recent profile as he prepares to perform at Canada Day celebrations in Ottawa. His latest release, “Drunk Right Now (Na Na Na)” featuring Akon, has also garnered attention.
Earlier this year at the Juno Awards, Ross walked a delicate line on political sentiments, urging Canadians to seek common ground with their southern neighbors. He remarked, “I think it’s time to get back to our Canadian roots and remember that friends are better than enemies,” signaling a desire for unity despite the divisive climate.
