World number one Jannik Sinner showcased his exceptional talent by defeating Adrian Mannarino 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) to secure his spot in the quarter-finals of the Cincinnati Open.
Right from the start, Sinner took command, breaking the resilient 37-year-old Frenchman early in the third game.
Despite Mannarino, currently ranked 89th globally, putting up a stubborn defense—saving a critical break point with an ace—he couldn't hold off Sinner, who seized the first set.
Then, Mother Nature intervened: play was suspended due to rain while Sinner was serving at 40-30, trailing 2-1 in the second set. After nearly three hours, the action resumed.
Mannarino proved to be a tough nut to crack in set two. Although he saved three break points at 5-5, he eventually succumbed to a fourth, netting a backhand that led to a 6-5 deficit.
With everything on the line, Sinner served for the match and found himself 30-0 up. Mannarino seized a moment of brilliance, earning his first break point with a stunning forehand return. However, Sinner responded with two back-to-back aces, clinching the tie-break 7-4 and marking his fourth consecutive victory over Mannarino.
"He’s a tough opponent—very different from anyone else I face, not just because he’s left-handed, but also due to how low he hits the ball," Sinner reflected. "Closing it out was a challenge, but I’m thrilled to advance."
In other matches, Alexander Zverev swiftly wrapped up his match against Brandon Nakashima, winning 6-4, 6-4 after rain interrupted their match overnight at 5-4 in the second set.
Zverev will take the court again on Wednesday against Russia's Karen Khachanov.
Seventh seed Holger Rune also advanced after Frances Tiafoe, the 10th seed from the U.S., retired trailing 6-4, 3-1 due to a back injury.
On the women's side, Wimbledon champion Iga Swiatek powered through to the quarter-finals with a strong 6-4, 6-3 win over Sorana Cirstea, despite recording 33 unforced errors.
"I aimed to be more solid than my last match," said Swiatek. "I’m pleased with my focus and consistency, especially under the challenging humid conditions."
Additionally, fellow Pole Magda Linette stunned fourth seed Jessica Pegula with a 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 6-3 comeback after their match resumed post-rain.
