Israel's Defence Minister Announces Major Offensive Expansion

In a significant escalation of the ongoing conflict, Israel's Defence Minister has declared that the military will "vigorously" extend its operations across much of Gaza.

Seizing Control and Issuing Evacuations

Israeli forces have reportedly taken control of a "security zone" in southern Gaza, effectively separating the cities of Rafah and Khan Younis. As part of their strategic operations, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have issued evacuation orders for Khan Younis and surrounding areas, preparing for military strikes in retaliation for projectiles launched from Gaza—an action for which Hamas has claimed responsibility.

Resuming Offensive After Ceasefire Fallout

The latest round of aggression resumed on March 18, following the collapse of a two-month ceasefire, leading to the seizure of vast territories in Gaza and displacing hundreds of thousands of residents.

Goals of the Offensive: Hostage Release and Buffer Zones

Israeli officials assert that the offensive aims to exert pressure on Hamas for the release of 59 remaining hostages—24 of whom are believed to be alive. Recent developments include the takeover of the "Morag axis," a former Jewish settlement, enhancing control over the area between Rafah and Khan Younis and creating a buffer zone to prevent further attacks.

Widespread Evacuations and Expansive Military Plans

Defence Minister Katz announced that IDF activities would soon broaden throughout Gaza, signaling that residents in these newly targeted areas are being urged to evacuate. "This is the last moment to remove Hamas, free the hostages, and bring an end to the war," he stated.

Northern Gaza Under Pressure Too

Operation efforts are also intensifying in northern Gaza, including Beit Hanoun and the strategic Netzarim Corridor, with evacuations ongoing to facilitate the expansion of Israeli control.

Hamas Responds and Human Rights Concerns Arise

Hamas has criticized the offensive, claiming it not only endangers defenseless civilians but also jeopardizes the fate of the hostages. Meanwhile, the UN's human rights office has expressed grave concerns over Israel's evacuation orders, accusing it of violating international law by failing to ensure safe accommodation and essential needs for displaced populations.
