In a shocking series of events in Toronto’s Rockcliffe-Smythe neighborhood, the province's police oversight body, the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), is looking into an incident where officers used a less-lethal firearm on a man following a reported stabbing. This dramatic episode unfolded early Saturday morning as police responded to an emergency call regarding a violent confrontation.

At approximately 7:40 a.m., officers arrived at an apartment on Woolner Avenue after receiving reports that a 56-year-old man had allegedly stabbed another individual and was subsequently threatening others with a staple gun.

Upon locating the suspect in a hallway, police reported that he approached them brandishing the staple gun, prompting an officer to fire a sock round—a type of less-lethal projectile—striking the man. In an effort to subdue him, other officers also deployed conducted energy weapons, such as tasers.

The suspect then retreated into his apartment and barricaded himself inside. As tensions escalated, an officer discharged their firearm in an attempt to control the situation, though fortunately, the suspect was not hit. The Emergency Task Force then stepped in to negotiate with him.

After a prolonged standoff, officers gained entry into the unit and discharged a less-lethal firearm again. The man was ultimately apprehended and transported to the hospital to receive treatment for serious injuries sustained during the encounter.

Remarkably, no police officers were reported injured throughout the ordeal, highlighting the potentially dangerous and volatile nature of the situation.

The SIU, which operates independently to investigate incidents involving police that result in death or serious injury, has committed a team of three investigators and two forensic experts to collect evidence and ascertain the facts surrounding this incident.

Community members and advocates are closely watching this investigation, as it raises questions about police engagement with individuals in crisis and the effectiveness of less-lethal alternatives in dangerous confrontations. As further details emerge, the SIU will continue its thorough investigation to ensure accountability and transparency in this case.
