A jaw-dropping video has emerged, showing the terrifying moment the Earth ripped apart during a devastating earthquake in Myanmar last March. With a simple camera shot aimed at a property’s gate, viewers witness an unimaginable transformation as the ground shakes violently.
As early as eight seconds into the clip, the metal gate begins to vibrate ominously. Suddenly, chaos erupts: the gate swings wide open, a nearby transmission tower collapses, and shockingly, the right side of the landscape slides forward—witnessing nature’s raw power in real-time.
This harrowing footage captures the magnitude 7.7 earthquake that struck on March 28, resulting in over 3,600 fatalities and countless injuries. Although the quake’s epicenter was near Mandalay, the seismic waves were felt as far away as Bangkok, Thailand’s capital. What makes this recording exceptionally haunting is that it depicts a ground rupture, marking an unprecedented occurrence of a fault line being visually documented.
Shared by Singaporean engineer Htin Aung on Facebook, the video caught the attention of the 2025 Sagaing Earthquake Archive, which later featured it on YouTube. The post boldly claims, 'This is the first (and currently only) known instance of a fault line motion being captured on camera.' Aung pointed out that this remarkable footage was filmed at GP Energy Myanmar’s Thapyawa solar farm.
Earth is essentially a puzzle of constantly moving tectonic plates. These gigantic slabs shift at a snail's pace—approximately as fast as your fingernails grow. Yet, when they clash or slide past each other, the energy that accumulates can release explosively, leading to catastrophic earthquakes. Areas situated on or near these plates, known as fault lines, are especially vulnerable to seismic activity. Myanmar lies atop the Sagaing Fault, a significant divide between the Sunda and Burma tectonic plates.
Characterized as a strike-slip fault, the Sagaing Fault’s plates slide horizontally against one another, resulting in movements that are vividly showcased in this chilling video. You can clearly see the land on the right slipping past the land on the left, a stark reminder of the forces at play beneath our feet.
Geophysicist Rick Aster from Colorado State University hailed the video as one of the most significant pieces of evidence documenting a large earthquake's surface rupture. He stated, 'To my knowledge, this is the best video we have of a throughgoing surface rupture of a very large earthquake.' He emphasized that this footage will likely prompt further investigation and could result in a scientific publication.
