Imagine a laptop where upgrading the graphics card is as easy as swapping out a battery. Framework, the modular computing company, has brought this jaw-dropping idea to life! This innovative approach is dubbed the "Holy Grail for gamers," making it potentially the first-ever futureproof gaming laptop.

Upgrading Made Effortless!

I had the exciting opportunity to visit Framework’s San Francisco headquarters to test this groundbreaking system myself. In an astonishingly quick three minutes—including reboot time—I swapped out an AMD Radeon RX 7700S for a brand-new mobile Nvidia RTX 5070. All it took was a simple pen-shaped screwdriver and six screws. Yes, you read that right—just six screws!

To prove how easy this upgrade is, I filmed the entire procedure! Trust me, this looks a whole lot simpler than the traditional MXM modules!

A Promise Kept!

This demo marks a critical moment in tech innovation. While other companies like Alienware ventured into the upgradeable laptop arena in 2019, they ultimately failed to deliver on their promises, leaving customers in the lurch. Framework, however, has gained the support of major players like Nvidia, ensuring that when they say they’ll provide future upgrades, they mean it.

Limited Testing, Big Results!

Though I couldn’t run extensive benchmarks during my visit, the initial gameplay tests were promising. Framework claims that this Nvidia card should deliver a 30 to 40 percent performance upgrade compared to the previous AMD model, and initial gameplay at 1440p and high settings showed no glaring issues! Of course, I faced a small hiccup: the original Framework Laptop 16 I brought needed software updates and a new BIOS before I could fully test it as a new Nvidia machine. So, I ultimately utilized a device that was already prepared for the GPU swap.

Powering Up Innovation!

During my visit, I also got my hands on Framework’s cutting-edge 240W USB-C PD 3.1 charger—the first of its kind on the market! I monitored its performance and was amazed to see the Framework Laptop 16 draw over 220W during stress tests, all while charging multiple devices without breaking a sweat!

A Niche Tech with Potential!

At $699, the mobile RTX 5070 isn’t for everyone, but it’s a significant step forward for modular technology in laptops. The second-generation laptop and the GPU are up for preorder, set to ship this December.
