With just two weeks remaining until the September 5 deadline, homeowners can select their preferred cart size for waste disposal. A Game-Changer for Waste Collection!

Olivia Kwok, Director of Waste Management, revealed that production of these new carts is already underway. The upgrade comes as part of an effort to modernize the waste collection process for over 170,000 households in the region.

Why the Change?

This transformation isn't a spontaneous decision. Due to the expiration of contracts with current service providers, the region recognized the growing difficulty in maintaining manual waste collection methods. Kwok stated, "It’s becoming increasingly challenging to staff manual collection, which is why we’re moving towards this innovative solution."

Safety and Efficiency Meet!

The new system is designed for efficiency and improved safety. Future waste collection will involve automated truck lifts to pick up carts—eliminating the need for workers to handle heavy bins manually. This change aims not only to enhance sanitation for waste handlers but also to support a cleaner environment.

Kwok emphasized that many municipalities across Ontario and North America have already adopted cart-based waste collection. This method has become a best management practice, praised for its safety, efficiency, and effectiveness in getting the job done.

What’s Not Changing?

While the collection process for waste and organics is undergoing a revamp, your recycling collection will remain the same. In March 2024, the recycling program will transition to the Circular Materials Group, continuing with its established system.
