
HP Printer Firmware Update Causes Major Issues with HP Cartridges – Users Outraged!

In a shocking turn of events, HP is facing backlash from its customers after a recent firmware update rendered many of its LaserJet printers incapable of using even HP-brand toner. This issue highlights a troubling trend in the printer industry where manufacturers' firmware updates are causing chaos for consumers.
The firmware update, identified as version 20250209, was released on March 4 for HP LaserJet MFP M232-M237 models. Officially described as a set of “security updates, regulatory requirement updates, general improvements and bug fixes,” the nature of the update has left customers frustrated. While previous updates included minor enhancements like print quality fixes and improvements in cartridge recognition, there was no mention regarding any changes in the printer's compatibility with toner.
Users soon began reporting significant issues following the update, with many unable to print using HP-brand cartridges. A common complaint involves encountering Error Code 11, accompanied by a flashing toner light, even after performing troubleshooting measures like cleaning contacts or reinstalling toner.
“As a small business owner, it’s beyond frustrating to have my printer stop working unexpectedly,” shared one user on March 8. “I just replaced the toner, which cost me $60, and now this!”
In response to the mounting distress, an HP spokesperson acknowledged the problem: “We are aware of a firmware issue affecting a limited number of HP LaserJet 200 Series devices and our team is actively working on a solution. For assistance, affected customers can contact our support team at hp.com.”
Despite this assurance, many customers have expressed concerns regarding the actual extent of the issue, as HP has not clarified how widespread the malfunction is. This isn’t the first time HP has faced scrutiny over problematic firmware updates. In May 2023, another update had caused multiple HP OfficeJet printers to malfunction, resulting in a blue screen error that left numerous users unable to print for weeks.
As frustration builds, some users are using their experiences as a springboard to shift their loyalty to competitors like Brother. One disgruntled customer noted, “I went out and got a similar Brother printer for $144 at Walmart. No more annoying auto firmware updates, and it comes with a bigger paper tray!”
Interestingly, Brother is also under scrutiny, having been accused in a viral video of intentionally degrading printer performance when using non-Brother toner. However, Brother has rebutted these claims, stating that their products maintain compatibility regardless of toner brand.
