In a recent revelation, Christian Horner, team principal of Red Bull Racing, has addressed the swirling controversies surrounding the selection of drivers for the 2025 Formula 1 season. This comes after a notable shuffle where Liam Lawson was initially chosen over seasoned driver Yuki Tsunoda. However, after just two races, Red Bull decided to reverse their decision, putting Tsunoda back in the driver's seat due to Lawson's difficulties adapting to the RB21 car.

Helmut Marko, Red Bull's motorsport advisor, hinted that the long-standing influence of former chief technical officer Adrian Newey may have played a role in Tsunoda's initial exclusion. Despite being part of the Red Bull family for four years and contributing significantly to AlphaTauri's point tally, Tsunoda was overlooked for what many viewed as an obvious choice for the vacant seat.

Marko pointed out that Newey, who left Red Bull to join Aston Martin after a lengthy tenure from 2007 to 2024, held considerable sway over the team's decisions. His frustration with Tsunoda, especially following a collision in Silverstone in 2022 that resulted in damage to Max Verstappen’s car, created a nostalgic rift. Marko recounted that since that incident, Tsunoda had been perceived as a liability, often remembered for his inconsistent performances and “silly mistakes.”

Reflecting on the decision-making process, Marko conceded, “Initially, we believed Lawson’s potential and mental resilience would complement Verstappen perfectly. But looking back, it was not the right decision.”

Amid this controversy, Newey’s wife, Amanda, took to social media to clarify that her husband had no influence in the recent driver selection, as he was on gardening leave at the time the decision was made. Horner supported this clarity: "Adrian wasn't involved in driver decisions for this year. The comments made by Helmut are more related to incidents from 2022, and Adrian did not have any input on our 2025 driver lineup."

As the situation unfolds, Tsunoda is set to participate in his first race for Red Bull at the Suzuka Circuit this weekend, a proving ground that could see him validate the team's renewed faith in his abilities.
