In a bizarre turn of events on Cascade Mountain in New York, two hikers panicked and called emergency services, claiming that their friend had died. However, officials later revealed that the trio had been under the influence of hallucinogenic mushrooms.
The incident unfolded on May 24 in the stunning Adirondacks High Peaks. The hikers informed authorities that they were lost and that one of their group members was deceased. But when park rangers arrived, they quickly determined that the so-called 'dead' hiker was alive and well.
Park officials confirmed that the pair who made the 911 call were in an "altered mental state" after consuming the mushrooms. Thankfully, the third hiker was unharmed and was returned to their campsite.
The unfolding drama came to light in a bulletin from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. A ranger was dispatched to assist with the reported emergency, and while en route, encountered a summit steward, whose role is to protect the fragile alpine ecosystem at the mountain’s peak.
Upon finding the two hikers, the ranger escorted them to safety, where they were met by an ambulance and New York State Police. As for the legal aftermath, it remains uncertain whether the hikers will face any repercussions for their actions.
It's important to note that psychedelic mushrooms are illegal for recreational use in New York, though discussions to legalize them have gained traction in recent times. Meanwhile, they are already legalized in certain other states, yet continue to be banned federally.
