In Singapore, vibrant and resilient coral reefs are facing an unexpected menace: mud from land! A shocking new study warns that while the corals thrive in murky waters, increasing coastal development and climate change could introduce more harmful sediment, endangering their survival.
Led by researchers from Nanyang Technological University (NTU), the study highlights that mud from land reclamation and heavy rainfall can smother corals, severely hindering their recovery from bleaching—a phenomenon where corals expel the algae they depend on for color and survival due to stress from rising sea temperatures.
The Dangers of Sedimentation!
The implications are dire! The research, published in the Marine Pollution Bulletin, examined six reefs within Singapore’s Southern Islands and found that corals struggling to adapt to excessive sediment face diminished growth and healing. Assistant Professor Kyle Morgan, who spearheaded the study, noted, "Even corals accustomed to cloudy waters find it challenging to thrive with too much mud."
