A Tragic Loss That Shook a Community

On a somber Wednesday evening, hundreds gathered at a Vaughan mosque, followed by a heartfelt service at Kleinberg cemetery, to honor Aleem Farooqi—a 46-year-old father of four and cherished local businessman—who was tragically killed during a home invasion over the weekend.

A Heroic Act Amidst Chaos

Farooqi's friends recount a harrowing scene: he was shot when he bravely intervened to protect his daughters from armed intruders. The chilling incident unfolded around 1 a.m. on August 31, and the suspects remain at large.

Reflections on a Kind Soul

Adil Malik, a close friend, expressed his devastation. "It’s been an emotional past few days—reflecting on his last moments and the pain his family is enduring," he shared.

Another friend highlighted Farooqi's sacrifice, stating, "He died protecting his family, a testament to his character." Vaughan’s Mayor, Steven Del Duca, expressed disbelief at the senselessness of the crime, praising the community's support for the grieving family.

A Community in Mourning

The Baitul Islam Mosque overflowed with mourners; many prayed outside and formed a queue to pay their respects to Farooqi’s family after the final prayers. His brother, Naeem, was moved by the tremendous support, recalling the many roles Farooqi played in life, from a devoted community member to a loving father.

A Call for Justice

"I urge the cowards responsible for this tragedy to turn themselves in," Naeem pleaded, asserting his faith in the justice system.

Burial and Community Support

Farooqi was laid to rest on Thursday at Nashville Cemetery, with family and friends taking poignant turns shoveling dirt onto his casket. "He wouldn’t hurt a fly and was always the first to help anyone in need," reflected another friend, Tayyab.

In a deeply felt statement, he noted, "This shouldn’t happen in Canada. It could have been any of us, but it happened to one of the best.”

Hope Amidst Grief

The third day of mourning, in line with Ahmadiyya custom, saw friends and family gathering at the Farooqi home. To support his teenage son and three young daughters, a crowdfunding campaign has already raised over $25,000.

Police Investigation Ongoing

Authorities are treating this as a robbery targeted at Farooqi for money. York Regional Police Chief Jim McSween assured the community that they are working diligently on the case, appealing for anyone with information to come forward.
