A shocking tale of betrayal has emerged from the Fraser Valley, where a couple fell victim to an elaborate scam orchestrated by a close family friend. Judy Lehmann, 69, and her husband Bernie, 79, shared their devastating experience with Global News, detailing how they were manipulated into believing they were under threat from a criminal gang.

The distressing saga began in 2019 when the Lehmanns were approached by Tyler Willard, a longtime friend, who falsely claimed that their lives were in danger and insisted they pay substantial sums of money for their safety. Over the course of the ordeal, the couple handed over nearly $300,000, drained of their savings and left in fear.

“Don’t make the same mistake I did,” Judy implored. “If someone tries to extort you, don’t be afraid to go to the RCMP. They can help you! I was terrified and felt completely isolated during that time. It was a nightmare.”

This spine-chilling scam not only highlights the vulnerability many face when trust is exploited but also underscores the importance of speaking out against such crimes. Authorities are encouraging anyone who suspects they may be a target of extortion to act quickly and report it.

In a twist of fate, Tyler Willard was sentenced to nine months of house arrest in December for his involvement in the extortion, and court-ordered restitution of $260,000 was imposed. However, the Lehmanns have been left disheartened as Willard has reportedly suffered a stroke and is currently on disability, casting doubt on their chances of recovering any of their lost funds.

This distressing case serves as a stark reminder to always verify information, even from those closest to us. As scams become increasingly sophisticated, vigilance is essential. If you or someone you know has been a victim of a similar crime, it's crucial to reach out to law enforcement or support networks for assistance. Don’t let fear silence your voice!
