Exciting News for Hanover Residents!

In a move set to benefit property owners greatly, the Rural Municipality of Hanover has announced a significant change to its property tax deadline, pushing it up from October 31 to October 15, 2025.

This change is designed to help residents dodge interest payments that can pile up when tax accounts fall into arrears.

Why the Change? Here’s the Scoop!

According to Derek Decru, the CFO of the RM, this decision came after a thorough evaluation of various factors. ‘We found that end-of-month workloads were taking up too much of our office’s time. Plus, with the rise of electronic payments, delays often mean financial penalties for residents.’

Many property owners facing potential late fees due to minor payment delays can breathe easier now!

A Grace Period to Save Money!

By shifting the deadline to October 15, Decru aims to provide Hanover residents with an effective grace period of about 15 days. This means you’ll now have ample time to avoid those pesky interest charges!

For those who don’t know, any unpaid balances accrue an interest rate of 1.25% on the first day of each month.

Convenient Payment Options Available!

But that’s not all! Hanover is also rolling out a monthly payment plan for its residents. This allows property owners to pay their taxes in manageable monthly installments, as the municipality will automatically deduct one-twelfth of the total amount from your account.

‘Once you set it up, it’s completely hassle-free,’ Decru added, urging residents to simply ensure their accounts are funded when payments come due.

Stay Informed with Reminder Notices!

Typically, between 78% and 83% of property taxes are collected by the deadline each year. For those who miss it, the RM sends out timely reminder notices—this year, after the new October 15 deadline!

A Financial Overview of the Municipality!

Decru expects Hanover’s property tax revenue to exceed $28.5 million this tax year, with $16.5 million going directly to the local school division and about $12.2 million enriching the municipality’s budget.

Further Service and Support!

Residents can make payments in-person at the RM office or via secure drop boxes available around the clock, though cash is not accepted. Don’t forget to include your roll number on any check submissions!

Lastly, Decru reminds everyone to submit applications for the Homeowners Affordability Tax Credit by September 29 to ensure timely processing and inclusion on your tax bill.
